Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery |

General William Davidson was killed leading his American Colonial troops into battle, on his horse, against the British Army near Cowans Ford on February 1, 1781. His soldiers recovered his body and buried him in the cemetery at Hopewell Presbyterian Church. The Hopewell Presbyterian Church and cemetary still stands on Beatties Ford Road across from the entrance to the Latta Plantation Park. The area is surrounded by a stone wall and many of the prominent early inhabitants of the area are buried in the cemetery.
There has been debate over the years as to whether General Davidson was actually buried in the cemetary, but recent infrared imaging has shown that there is a body under the general's marker.
Ghost Rider
On the night of February 1 each year an apparition, on a horse, appears out of the air riding, silently, over the tombstones. The ghost rider lifts his saber, as if to encourage his men into battle, before disappearing into the mist.
